As a private nature reserve, the Timbavati does not receive any government funding. Instead, the reserve relies only on income from conservation levies and donations to fund its extensive operations, including wildlife security and conservation efforts.

As a result of the exponential increase in rhino poaching across Southern Africa security costs have risen by 900 % in the past few years
There are 18 lodges on Timbavati which offer all-inclusive accommodation options, as well as four self-catering camps. As a visitor, you are contributing meaningfully to the operations of Timbavati, as well as the employment of local people from neighbouring communities.
Of approximately 900 people who work at Timbavati’s lodges, about 700 are from the local area. On average, every person who is employed supports about eight other unemployed people in the region. Therefore, every new job created by Timbavati has an eightfold impact.

RESPONSIBLE TOURISM
Each visitor to Timbavati pays a conservation levy which goes towards funding the operations of the reserve.
Without this levy, Timbavati would not be able to afford to conserve and protect this 556 square kilometre wilderness. Ten percent of every levy goes towards the Timbavation Foundation, a non-profit organization which works with local communities to improve health care, education and environmental awareness.
TIMBAVATI TRAVERSE
The Timbavati Traverse offers participants a way to donate funds to the reserve, by participating in a 21km walk and run, or 42 km run, or an 80km mountain bike route.

The Timbavati Foundation was formed in 2010 to actively improve the education, livelihoods and wellbeing of our neighbouring communities.
The Foundation’s operating philosophy is based on the concept of Ubuntu, roughly translated as “humanity”, or “We are who we are, because of each other”. We know from ecological principles that everything is linked together, and we know that Timbavati can flourish in the long term only if our neighbouring communities are successful too.
