ABOUT TRAVERSE

The Timbavati Traverse was inspired by Grant Murphy, head ranger at Kings Camp.

He ran 96kms through Timbavati during the Covid pandemic in 2020, to raise funds for the anti-poaching dog handlers.

In 2025, participants can enter a 45km marathon, a 21km half-marathon,21km walk, oran 80km mountain bike route. Only 20 participants are allowed per group, to ensure safety as well as exclusivity.

The Timbavati Traverse covers beautiful, rugged terrain which puts runners, walkers and mountain bikers to the test.

Along the way, participants can expect to see giant baobabs, stunning mountain views, but especially a plethora of wild animals, and potentially – elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and if they are lucky, a leopard.

The Traverse is not a race, but an opportunity to experience Timbavati’s wilderness and wildlife on foot or on bike, as part of a small group of fellow participants. Each group will start together, at split times from the other groups.

Safety is the priority. Support vehicles and armed guides will accompany participants through the day, and competent medical personnel will be on call at all times.

TIMBAVATI TRAVERSE 2025

Participants have the option of walking 21km, running 21km or 45km, or cycling 80km.

Each route will have water points at every 7km for runners and walkers, and every 25 or 30km for cyclists. These manned water points will provide free energy-boosting snacks, water and energy drinks.

All entry fees are donated to the Timbavati Foundation, a non-profit organisation that works with local communities to improve health care, education and environmental awareness, as well as the anti-poaching teams which patrol Timbavati, and protect its wildlife.
